The Audition Intensive aims to develop vocal, physical and improvisational skills in actors as they prepare for future auditions. It addresses a range of audition scenarios, especially for the large Drama schools such as NIDA, VCA and WAAPA, and provides participants with varying skills to practice dealing with these. Participants work with the tutor to develop a monologue of their choosing. The tutor will workshop the piece and the types of responses the auditionee may receive and how to flexibly work with these. The Intensive will culminate in a ‘virtual audition’ where the participant will perform their piece for a panel of professionals and receive feedback that will assist them in developing their best audition.

Meet your Tutor!
Joel Horwood is a graduate of the acting program at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA) and is delighted to be leading the audition intensive at CYT this year!
While still training, Joel was cast as soldier Len Barwick in the Logie-nominated docudrama, The War that Changed Us (ABC/Electric Pictures). Joel went on to make his professional stage debut in 2015, performing the role of Henry in Next to Normal (Black Swan State Theatre Company). In the following year, Joel received a Best Supporting Actor award for this performance at the Performing Arts WA awards.
Having recently relocated to the nation’s capital, Joel is thrilled to be sharing his knowledge of theatre and performance with the talented young artists of Canberra.
