Do your workshops run by terms or semesters?
Canberra Youth Theatre Workshops in our Primary School and Gorman Arts Centre Programs run by semester.
Our Gorman Arts Centre Workshop Program is 15 weeks long. In 2017 Semester 2 starts in week 2 of school term 3.
Our Primary School Workshop Program is 18 weeks long. In 2017 Semester 2 starts in week 2 of school term 3.
In the past our Outer Metropolitan Workshop program (Tuggeranong and Belconnen Arts Centres Ensembles) has been 14 weeks long. Usually Semester 1 starts in week 3 of school term 1 and Semester 2 starts in week 1 of school term 3.
The start and finish dates for our workshops this semester are displayed in each individual workshop description.
If my child hasn’t done a Semester 1 workshop can they do Semester 2?
Yes, each semester has a brand new program.
How do I know if my child/I will like drama workshops?
We are now offering Taster Workshops at the beginning of each year. Alternatively, you could try a short-term workshop such as our Holiday Program, or get in touch with the CYT Office to view an end of semester performance.
What is your cancellation policy?
If you need to withdraw from classes, we can offer a refund or waive an invoice if it is within the first 3 weeks of the Workshop Program. This will be a pro-rata refund less an administration fee of $15.60 per enrolment. If you are on a payment plan we still require payment of classes attended and the administration fee. We are unable to provide refunds or waive invoices for withdrawals after week 3.
We are unable to provide refunds for withdrawals from Holiday Workshops.
We are able to provide refunds for withdrawals from Masterclasses up to 14 days prior to the start date.
Please note – the CYT Membership is not refundable however this membership does give you discounts throughout the year to our productions and other workshops.
As a parent, can I come and sit in on the workshop program?
It is our policy at CYT that parents are to remain outside the workshop because:
- It is the participants’ time to be creative with their peers.
- It can be disruptive to the learning and creative process having non-participants in the space
- It can introduce an element of performance when the group is focused on development
- Some participants may become introverted or self-conscious with either parents or ‘strangers’ watching on
- All of our tutors undergo a Working With Vulnerable Persons (WWVP) Clearance. We are unable to have visitors outside of delegated performance times as we can not guarantee their WWVP status.
If your child is nervous, you are welcome to wait just outside the workshop so that they can find you easily.
We also have Family Week mid-way through workshop programs and an End of Semester Performance for parents and friends to see the progress of their child in the program.
My child is turning seven during the semester; can they participate while they are still six years old?
All participants MUST be seven years old on the first day of their workshop.
My child has a birthday during the semester, which would put them in the next age group up. Which class should I enrol them in?
This depends on your child’s birthdate. Young artists need to be the correct age for their group by week 9 of the semester (week beginning 18 September 2017). For example, if your child turns 13 years of age before 18 September, then they should be enrolled in the 13 – 15 years Ensemble; if they are still 12 years old by 18 September then they should be enrolled in the 10 -12 years Ensemble.
We strongly advise that all young artists move up into the appropriate ensemble for their age in order to challenge and further develop their performance skills.
Please note regardless of birthdate all participants MUST be seven years old on the first day of their workshop.
How does CYT assign tutors to workshops?
Tutors are employed due to their exceptional skills and expertise within the professional theatre setting as well as their experience working with young people. Due to our tutors being professional artists in their own right, each semester they indicate their availability which then informs our scheduling for all our workshops across the company. All tutors employed by CYT must hold an updated Working With Vulnerable People clearance.
Do CYT tutors have to have a current Working With Vulnerable People clearance?
Yes, all tutors employed by CYT and all CYT staff involved in working with our young artists must hold a current Working With Vulnerable People clearance.
